What is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder?

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition outlined in the DSM-5 that can develop in individuals who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event. PTSD is characterized intrusive thoughts, nightmares, or flashbacks related to the traumatic event. Individuals with PTSD often avoid reminders of the trauma, experience negative changes in mood and cognition, such as persistent negative emotions, distorted blame of oneself or others, and feelings of detachment from others. They may also have heightened arousal, which can manifest as irritability, difficulty sleeping, and an exaggerated startle response.

What is Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder?

Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD) is a mental health condition recognized in the ICD-11. It primarily affects individuals who have experienced prolonged and severe trauma, such as repeated physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, or prolonged exposure to stressful and traumatic situations, often in a relational context. C-PTSD is characterized by disturbances in self-identity, affect regulation, and interpersonal relationships. Individuals may struggle with a profound sense of helplessness and loss of control, leading to enduring emotional and psychological challenges.

What is Dissociation?

Symptoms of dissociative disorders may include:
Memory loss or gaps in memory, feeling detached from oneself or one’s surroundings, identity confusion or multiple identities, inability to recall important personal information, distress or impairment in functioning due to these symptoms.

A couple of the DSM 5 diagnoses include: Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID): Formerly known as multiple personality disorder, 2. Dissociative Amnesia: Characterized by an inability to recall important personal information. Dissociation could also be included as a sub type of PTSD.

What is a Personality Disorder?

According to the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition), a personality disorder, such as Narcissistic Personality Disorder or Borderline Personality Disorder, is a persistent pattern of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that deviate from cultural expectations and cause distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning. These patterns are inflexible and pervasive across a broad range of situations, and they typically lead to significant problems in relationships and daily activities. Counseling could be a two year or life-long journey for a Personality Disorder.
